چکیده

Accurate specification of hurricane inner-core structure is critical to predicting the evolution a hurricane. However, observations over inner cores are generally lacking. Previous studies have emphasized Tail Doppler radar (TDR) data assimilation improve representation. Recently, wind lidar (DWL) has been used as an observing system sample and environmental conditions. The NOAA P3 Hurricane Hunter aircraft DWL installed can obtain hurricane’s core when passes through In this study, we examine impact assimilating winds TDR radial on prediction Earl (2016) with NCEP operational Weather Research Forecasting (HWRF) system. A series experiments conducted Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI)-based ensemble-3DVAR hybrid identify best way assimilate into HWRF forecast results show positive analysis prediction. Compared u v components, speed provides better track intensity forecasts. Proper choices thinning distances (e.g., 5 km horizontal 70 hPa vertical for DWL) help achieve in terms vortex representation cycles, combined (DWL wind, along other conventional data, e.g., Automated Data Processing (ADP) data) offsets downgrade from absence cycle outperforms single type (either or leads improved forecasts track, intensity, structure. Overall, beneficial most cases. outcomes study demonstrate great potential including profiles improvement.

Assimilation of coastal Doppler radar data with the ARPS 3DVAR and cloud analysis for the prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008)

[1] The impact of radar data on the analysis and prediction of the structure, intensity, and track of landfalling Hurricane Ike (2008), at a cloud-resolving resolution, is examined. Radial velocity (Vr) and reflectivity (Z) data from coastal radars are assimilated over a 6-h period before Ike landfall, using the ARPS 3DVAR and cloud analysis package through 30-min assimilation cycles. Eighteen-...

Performance of convection‐permitting hurricane initialization and prediction during 2008–2010 with ensemble data assimilation of inner‐core airborne Doppler radar observations

[1] This study examines a hurricane prediction system that uses an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to assimilate high‐ resolution airborne radar observations for convection‐ permitting hurricane initialization and forecasting. This system demonstrated very promising performance, especially on hurricane intensity forecasts, through experiments over all 61 applicable NOAA P‐3 airborne Doppler missi...

Improved Doppler Radar/Satellite Data Assimilation

Our goal is to develop a short-term high-resolution data assimilation capability that can provide the Navy with improved analyses and forecasts of atmospheric conditions with sufficient detail and accuracy for supporting the Navy mission in threat detection, weapons deployment, and weather safe operations. The data assimilation system will utilize all available weather data, such as Doppler rad...

Improving Wind and Rain Simulations for Tropical Cyclones with the Assimilation of Doppler Radar Data

More accurate prediction of the strong winds and heavy rain associated with tropical cyclones using numerical weather prediction (NWP) models would be helpful in the provision of weather services for the public. In this paper, the impact of assimilating radar data in the simulation of Typhoon Neoguri and Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri in 2008 is studied using Weather Research and Forecasting (WR...

Assimilation of Radar Radial Velocity Data with the WRF Ensemble- 3DVAR Hybrid System for the Prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008)

An enhanced version of the hybrid ensemble-3DVAR data assimilation system for the WRF model is applied to the assimilation of radial velocity (Vr) data from two coastal WSR-88D radars for the prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008) before and during its landfall. In this hybrid system, flow-dependent ensemble covariance is incorporated into the varitional cost function using the extended control var...
